Sen. Joe Manchin met with civil rights leaders Tuesday morning. The meeting focused on, among other topics, voting rights.

The list of leaders Manchin spoke with includes the Rev. Al Sharpton.

Sharpton tweeted about the meeting after it happened, calling it “candid.”

“We laid out why his support on Voting and Police reform laws are vital,” Sharpton tweeted. “He says he listened to us intently and will be back to us within days.”

The meeting comes two days after Manchin wrote an op-ed saying he would not support HR1, also known as the For the People Act.

President Joe Biden had urged the leaders to meet with Manchin. He told them to keep the tone friendly and constructive and to not pressure Manchin.
