Morning Consult poll: Biden/Trump rematch most popular matchup for 2024

According to the latest Politico/Morning Consult poll, it appears a rematch between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump is the most popular matchup for the 2024 presidential race. The poll, conducted over this past weekend, found 63% of Democrats want President Biden to run for reelection. Meanwhile, 70% of Republicans want former President Trump to run again.

Biden has maintained since March that he plans on running in 2024. Since then, his approval rating has dropped from a high of 57% to 46%, according to the poll. FiveThirtyEight has Biden’s approval as low as 43.6%. White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki reiterated Biden’s intentions as recently as Monday.

“The President has every intention of running for reelection,” Psaki said at her daily briefing. However, she added that for now, the White House is focused “on what the American people elected the president to do just over a year ago, which is to get COVID under control, to put people back to work, and to help give people some breathing room.”

Meanwhile, Trump has has yet to say if he’s running. Multiple sources say it’s something he’s considering. Trump hinted at the idea as recently as this past weekend at a campaign event in Orlando.

“I said loud and clear,” the former president said, according to the Orlando Sentinel. “We won the first time, and the second time we won by even more. And it looks like we might have to think about, very strongly, a third time.”

(None of the former president’s legal challenges pertaining to claims of election fraud have held up in court.)

The new poll also took a look at who people would want to run and potentially face Trump in 2024 if Biden doesn’t. Leading the pack by some distance is Vice President Kamala Harris at 31%. This, despite her approval rating being lower than Biden’s. The poll has her favorability at 43%, and the Los Angeles Times has her approval at 40%.

Out of the potential field of Biden replacements, the only people to register more than 1% include:

  • Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) (8%)
  • Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) (8%)
  • Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) (5%)
  • Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) (3%)
  • Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) (3%)

25% said they were not sure. 3% said they would not vote if Biden did not run.
